Replying to leads in DMs and WhatsApp so they buy
When advertising sends people into a conversation, the purchase decision is made there, not on your website. That makes the quality of your replies as important to cost per customer as the creative and the account setup. It is also the one part of the funnel almost nobody measures.
Ads can send people to a landing page, a lead form or a chat. When they go to a chat, responsibility for the sale moves there, and there is usually no script, no tracking and no idea how many people left without a reply.
Why chats lose more than they appear to
- No record. A form submission shows up in the ad account; a message does not show up anywhere. A dropped conversation leaves no trace.
- Speed collapses in the evening. Peak enquiry time is exactly when nobody is working.
- The person replying is not the person selling. Often it is whoever runs the content, and they have a different job.
- The price question ends the conversation. «DM us» or «it depends» stops half of all threads.
- There is no second touch. Someone did not reply, and the thread hangs there forever.
The shape of a reply that leads to payment
- Answer the question that was asked. Literally that one, in the first line, with no five-line greeting first.
- Price or range immediately. If it varies, give the bounds and say what moves them. Avoiding it reads as «expensive, not for you».
- One question back. Exactly one: a conversation is not a form. It should move the person toward a choice, not collect data.
- The category's main worry, removed. Lead time, sizing, returns, what happens if it does not fit.
- A concrete next step. A payment link, two time slots, a cart button. Not «let me know if you are interested».
«Hello! Thanks for reaching out. Pricing depends on many factors, so tell us what you are looking for and we will prepare a personalised proposal.» The person already told you what they were looking for. They asked a question and received a form.
What to measure
| Metric | Benchmark | What a gap means |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first reply | Minutes during working hours | Hours means half the conversations never start |
| Share of enquiries with no reply | Zero | Any number here is money advertising already spent and nobody used |
| Share of threads that reached a price | More than half | Less means the price is presented in a way that ends conversations |
| Share of threads with a second touch | At least a third | Zero means everyone who did not reply instantly is lost |
| Evening and weekend enquiries | Count separately | Often the worst replies and the biggest losses live here |
What to do without hiring anyone
- Collect the five most frequent questions and write a ready answer to each, with a price and a next step.
- Save them as quick replies so nobody retypes them.
- Agree one rule: a price question is answered with a number, not with another question.
- Once a week, open every thread where the last message came from the customer, and write again.
- Log time to first reply for two weeks. Then you will know whether you need another person or just the rules.
Automation helps only at the first step: it keeps the person in the conversation until a human arrives. The human still does the selling, which is exactly why what they write matters.
FAQ
Should ads point straight into a chat?
It depends whether someone is available when people actually write. Chat produces cheaper enquiries than a website, but they decay faster. If replies take a day, a lead form or a landing page will earn more at the same cost per enquiry.
Are template replies bad?
They are bad when the template answers something other than what was asked. They are good when the template is a precise, prepared answer to a frequent question.
Why is this a question for an ads specialist?
Because in the ad account a loss in the inbox looks like an expensive customer. Not seeing that, the obvious fix is cutting budget or changing creative, which means changing the part that was already working.
