Advertising premium products to US and European markets
The more expensive the product, the less the creative matters and the more the structure does. Nobody buys a two-thousand-dollar device on first sight. They buy it weeks later, once they have worked out what it is and why it costs that much.
I ran advertising for a premium device priced above two thousand dollars for US and European markets. The client came after a US agency that had produced no result in three months. One person running the full funnel outperformed those three months within the first month. Full case.
Why expensive products do not sell directly
- The category is unfamiliar. People are not searching for your product because they do not know it exists.
- The price needs justifying. Not a discount, but an understanding of what the money buys.
- The decision is rarely made alone. Expensive purchases usually involve someone else.
- The window is long. Weeks, sometimes months, between first impression and purchase. Optimising for purchases in week one has nothing to learn from.
The three-stage funnel
| Stage | Job | What you show | What you optimise for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Explain what it is | The product in a life, not in a studio | Views, time on site |
| Middle | Justify the price | How it is made, why it costs that, comparisons | Deep views, subscribes |
| Bottom | Remove the last doubt | Reviews, warranty, returns, shipping | Purchase |
Most launches build only the bottom of the funnel: «buy now with a discount» aimed at people seeing the category for the first time. It comes out expensive and thin. The top of the funnel looks like spend without return right up until the bottom starts working, which is exactly why it gets switched off first.
Time and money
- First conclusions: not before three or four weeks, because the decision cycle is long.
- Budget: from 800 to 1000 dollars per channel, or the top of the funnel never reaches volume.
- Before launch you need an English-language site that survives comparison with competitors, and correct purchase tracking.
About western agencies
There is a common belief that selling into the US requires a US agency. My experience says otherwise: in a high-ticket category what decides the outcome is not where the contractor sits, but whether one person holds the whole funnel. In an agency your account is often run by a junior while strategy sits with someone else, and what gets lost between them is precisely what matters here.
FAQ
Can you sell a high-ticket product into the US from Europe?
Yes, and I have. What matters is not where the specialist sits but whether there is an English site, workable shipping, and someone answering email in their time zone.
How long until the first sales?
In a high-ticket category the first month is mostly data collection and top of funnel. Sales usually become predictable from the second or third month. Anyone promising otherwise has either not worked at these price points or is selling.
